Problem:
After reading chapter 10, I learned more about the issues in theory and practice when it comes to counseling. One point in the self inventory that I disagreed with a little was that clients should always select goals of counseling. I think that this should be a collaborative process that both the counselor and client should be a part of. Clients should have a big part in making goals because they will be more willing to achieve them. Goals are a necessary part of counseling. Something that I agreed with is that it is critical to take cultural factors into consideration in assessment and diagnosis, especially with high risk clients. This is very important because suicide is looked at differently in different cultures. It is important to have cultural humility when approaching all situations as a counselor, but especially in sensitive situations. I also think that it is very important for counselors to develop and modify their own theory of counseling as they practice. To me, professional development is very important because counseling theories are constantly evolving and changing. Consulting with other professionals and learning more about the practice is important so that clients can get the most up to date treatment. Theory is what guides counselors decision making and it is very important. Contracts are an important way for the client and therapist to define the therapeutic relationship and collaboratively set goals. Ones' theoretical orientation helps to guide the goals that they set. Goals can be very short term or more long term depending on how long therapy is lasting. Need Assignment Help?
