Homework: Environmental Science
Complete this two-part short-essay homework. For each part, compare, contrast, and analyze your responses with clear examples and references. Use your textbook to help outline specific principles and processes that support your answers.
You must use at least three reliable sources: The best place to find reliable scientific sources is through the library. In fact, there is a research guide created just for this class. (Opens in new tab)* It includes many helpful tips on doing college-level research. If you simply google the topic, many of the links you find first are not going to be from reliable sources! For this homework, publications from these three types of sources are accepted as reliable as far as grading is concerned: peer-reviewed journal articles, government agencies and/or academic institutions. If you use a source that does not fall into one of these three categories, you must include a note in the bibliography as to why you are considering that source a reliable source for scientific information. Typically, these justifications are not valid (for research), but each will be evaluated on a case by case basis and considered for grading. Any sources used as supporting evidence that does not fall into one of the three categories above will not count for grading, which will significantly lower the credit a student can earn for the discussions.
Remember to both cite your sources (at least 3) and add a bibliography at the end.
A 3 to 5 pages paper (any formatting is acceptable, although you must clearly delineate each question) will be submitted to Canvas addressing the following parts:
Part A: In a short essay, answer the following questions. No word count is required; the objective is to critically assess the chapter's outlined worldviews by comparing each to your ideas and beliefs. Provide examples and references to support your answers. Make sure to cite your sources with reliable references.
Textbook summarized several different environmental worldviews: human-centered, life-centered, and earth-centered. Which, if any, of these environmental worldviews do you favor? If you disagree with all of them, what is your environmental worldview? Has your environmental worldview changed because you took this course? If so, how? Is your environmental worldview sustainable?
Part B: In a short essay, complete the following prompt and questions. No word count is required. Provide examples and references to support your answers. Make sure to cite your sources with reliable references.
Explain why you agree or disagree with the following statements: (1) everyone has the right to have as many children as they want; (2) all people have a right to use as many resources as they want; (3) individuals should have the right to do whatever they want with land they own, regardless of whether such actions harm the environment, their neighbors, or the local community; (4) other species exist to be used by humans; (5) all forms of life have a right to exist regardless of their usefulness to humans. Are your answers consistent with the beliefs making up your environmental worldview, which you described in Part A? If not, explain.
Format your homework according to the following formatting requirements:
(1) The answer should be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides.
(2) The response also includes a cover page containing the title of the homework, the student's name, the course title, and the date. The cover page is not included in the required page length.
(3) Also include a reference page. The Citations and references should follow APA format. The reference page is not included in the required page length.
