The sequester- potentially harmful, automatic budget cuts-can affect jobs, services, education, and public safety. In 2013, the U.S. Congress was unable to reach a compromise on the federal budget, and on March 1, the sequester began. According to a poll conducted during the Summer, 22% of Americans said they had been significantly affected by resulting cuts.71 Early in the Fall, in a new survey, 55 of 310 randomly selected Americans said they were significantly affected by the resulting cuts.
