Though some aspects of institutional security are shared with commercial, retail, and event security, there are some definite differences. Institutional security typically refers to security measures set up by corporate or government entities to protect very important structures, products, or people. Institutional security is implemented when threat levels are much higher than those that would call for retail/event security. Therefore, one major difference between the two is the level of threat. Another difference is the security features and techniques that are used in service of each security type. With common retail security systems comes security features such as cameras, guards, locks, etc. Institutional security uses more advanced screening methods like fingerprinting, retina scans, and advanced camera technologies.
