Is the story fair to the reader

Problem: There are two short articles, one called "How to Read a Mystery," and the other called "10 Essential Elements of a Mystery." Read the two articles (you will be quoting from them as well as the mystery story you choose, and don't forget the required parenthetical citations). Then analyze "A very old man with enormous wings: A tale for children" by Gabriel Marquez, looking for the following:

1. Are the elements discussed in the articles used effectively in the story? How (or how not); cite examples.

2. Is the story "fair" to the reader (yes, it is fair to mis-direct with red herrings, but it is not fair to add something magical at the end.

3. Your conclusion will be more evaluative. Based on what elements the story utilizes and how cleverly it does so, you will very briefly decide if it makes an effective mystery story.
