Tocqueville observes that America's passion for equality is often at the expanse of freefom particularly, he argues that the majority exercises a tyranny over th American mind. Subtle and not-subtle pressures lead to a homogenization and conformity of thought that is reduced to the lowest common denominator. Ironically, though America takes pride in its freedom of thought, it has been argued that it actually lacks intellectual diversity of thought due to the leveling pressures of the majority.
