Potential Essay Exam Questions
the following two questions will be on your exam. You will be asked to write aTwo-three-page essay in response to the question.
Be sure to use a standard essay format, draw uponcourse concepts, define and apply them and developyour ideas.
1. Discuss the origins of at least two problems associated with news content discussed by Bennett in Chs. 4 or 8 of his book and/or Bagdikian's reading "Only the Affluent Need Apply." Given the causes of these problems proposed by these scholars what solution(s) might mitigate or solve them? Do you agree that the public should be concerned about either problem defined by Bennett and/or Bagdikian? Why or why not?
2. Is it possible for the Internet to constitute a new public sphere that provides access to U.S. and global publics to both produce as well as receive news from differing perspectives? What characteristics of the Internet could facilitate such an outcome? What are the obstacles to having the Internet constitute a new public sphere?
