Is college worth the money? Does education provide the most reliable path to upward social mobility? These questions are increasingly important today as the competitions in the job market intensify. Education is highly valued in many cultures. According to a survey conducted by HSBC, many parents are willing to go into debt in order to provide their children with better access to educational opportunities. Yet, as school and college tuitions increase year after year, many worry that education is no longer an equalizing power in society, but a social institution that reflects the general patterns of social inequality and the enlarging gap between the rich and poor.
Elaborate on the value of education based on your own experiences, observations, and library research:
• How much money have your parents paid for your education? Do you think education is worth the money?
• Do you think education serves to narrow the gap between the rich and poor, or enlarge the gap?
