Investigate the types of jobs available for people

Objective: The goal of this exercise is to go online to investigate the types of jobs available for people with AIS skills and backgrounds.

Details: Find five job listings online that require an education or experience with AIS. The positions must be for professional positions and not bookkeeping positions. If you list a regular bookkeeper or accountant position, you will be docked points (note: if the position title says “accountant” or any other traditional accounting position, you probably should keep looking).

The position must require an AIS background. The AIS experience MUST be something more than familiarity with Quickbooks or Microsoft Office. The goal is to find jobs that really require a combination of accounting and systems. We are looking for positions that are outside of traditional accounting positions. Have a look at the job description, and education. Do the duties require a combination of accounting and systems?

Again, if it says any sort of normal accounting position (controller, CFO, etc), you should keep looking. You will know if it is a combination of the two disciplines by the education and experience requirements.

For each position, read through the full job posting. Note the following:

• Job title
• Location
• Pay scale
• Experience requirements
• Education requirements

Create a document where you list each position you found and the five bullets above for each position. You may not have pay scales for each position. This is fine.

After briefly listing the bullets above for each position, discuss briefly (1-2 paragraphs) what you learned during this process. What did you find out? Was anything surprising? Interesting?

Hint: Entering “AIS” into monster.com may not always be the best idea.
