Introduction to Conflict and Communication

Conflict studies is the multidisciplinary field of study that is devoted to the understanding and analysis of causes of conflict; methods to manage conflict; and approaches and processes to resolve and transform conflict (Rioux&Redekop, 2013). This week we will introduce the course and its objectives and identify why conflict occurs and its structure.

1. For your journal and our first discussion, read "Difficult Conversations" Introduction and Chapter One. Come to class prepared to discuss a difficult conversation you have had, and address the following:

• What made it difficult?
• What were the "What Happened?" "Feeling" and "Identity" components to this conversation?
• What did your response look like? What did you wish it looked like?
• What were the positional, underlying and intractable features of this conflict?

Read over the course outline and assignments, and come with any questions you might have.
