Assignment task: Choose one of the case studies from Harvard's article: Top 10 International Business Negotiation Case Studies. State which case study you have chosen, but do not summarize it.
1. Interpret the appropriate intercultural communication practice for your chosen case study. You could consider verbal and nonverbal communication.
- Cite 2-3 specific concepts from this week's materials that would have been valuable for the parties to understand and why.
- Next, explain how each of the theories/topics you've selected in prompt #1 are important or relevant to your own work life. Even if you aren't regularly communicating in an international setting, these concepts apply to everyday interactions.
2. Explain the impact hand gestures may have had in your chosen case study (Understanding Intercultural Communication text, pp. 173-175).
- Be sure to specifically explain the role of and use examples of at least one of the following: emblems, illustrators, regulators, and/or adaptors.
3. Take the role of one of the parties in your scenario (if the United States is involved, be sure to select the non-U.S. party). From this perspective, critique the American proxemics norm(s) (Understanding Intercultural Communication text, pp. 179).
- You can use some creativity here to work out how a member of this culture would interpret this.
4. Finally, argue for or against cultural universalism (Understanding Intercultural Communication text, pp. 170).
