Some may experience difficulty with proper threat assessments. Others may develop maladaptive coping styles that lead to issues like substance use. These individuals may continue to experience exposure to these traumas and stressors in their lives. For example, those who are abused and do not leave the situation may continue to be abused, compounding the trauma. Other individuals may isolate.
