Problem: In this chapter, we examine interest groups and their role in the American political system. Interest groups are organized groups of individuals who share common goals and seek to influence public policy. Unlike political parties, they do not run candidates for office. Instead, they attempt to influence decisions made by lawmakers, Congress, and bureaucratic agencies. Examples include business organizations, labor unions, environmental groups, civil rights organizations, and professional associations. These groups influence government through lobbying, campaign contributions, grassroots mobilization, and public advocacy. This chapter also introduces two policymaking models: iron triangles and issue networks. These models help explain how organized interests gain, maintain, and compete for influence within government.
