Individual response evaluation mode of classroom talk

Assignment:

Individual Response Evaluation ( IRE): a pattern of classroom talk in which the teacher asks a question, a student answers and the teacher accepts or rejects the answer and goes on to ask another question. Sometimes these forms of questions are appropriate because teachers do need to get certain points across to students. IRE discussions do not provide the type of language input and feedback that advance children's knowledge of language structure and use. These types of dialogues do not allow children to build and develop meaning through dialogue, so this cannot be the only form of classroom talk that takes place between teachers and students. Teachers need to engage students in different modes of classroom talk.
