This can be seen best in the areas of life which could constitute competition. Clinton and Hawkins (2011) identify "Business, academia, athletics, and beauty" as the primary categories in which competition thrives, though there are many other areas. When competition ensues and a high standard of excellence is being pursued, the path to perfectionism is most often found. Perfectionists are people "Who have a strong tendency to be satisfied only by the highest standards" (Clinton and Hawkins, 2011, p. 192). It is important to note that striving for excellence is not inherently harmful, however, perfectionism is rooted in the desire to be flawless in one or many aspects of life. Clinton and Hawkins (2011) propose that perfectionism can be viewed on a spectrum with one side having people who pursue high standards in a healthy way and those on the other side who pursue unreasonable and unattainable.
