Discussion 1:

National Union Building this is great example of what DC is currently doing with downtown architecture infill building. The national Union Building is a good example of American Romanesque style---its round arches and chunky stonework recall the Romanesque pilgrimage churches of St.Foy and Durham Cathedral. The building next door is the Ventana, a 12-story steel and glass tower incorporating the empty space next to the National Union building and rising above and behind the two brick houses next door.

1. Does the Ventana visually acknowledge the National Union Building in any way or does it ignore it completely in its design? Be specific. You cannot just answer "acknowledge" or "ignore."

2. In your opinion, do you think the Ventana destroys the architectural character of the city, or does it keep architecture alive, introducing new ideas and spaces into a modern city?
