In young goodman brown you might select a quote from one

Assignment -

Read the article "Young Goodman Brown" is, after all, an allegory (an extended metaphor), and closely examine a quotation to assess the underlying meaning. In "Young Goodman Brown," you might select a quote from one major scene or from an interaction between the title character and one of Salem's "pious."

For your post, include one quotation. Properly integrate the quote by introducing, explaining, and citing it. Try using one style from the "Quotation Guide" to help you along.

Quotation Guide-

Quotations Should:

  • Support your argument.
  • Include three or more words from a text.
  • Include a citation.
  • Be specific and appropriate to the point you are making.
  • Include a frame of introduction.
  • NOT stand in for analysis.
  • NOT act as filler.
  • NOT represent basic information that could be summarized.

Picking a Quotation: Choose evidence that supports your point in a meaningful way. There are hundreds of words you could quote from a given book, article, data analysis, or study, but are they all the best words for supporting your point? Finding good quotes is about finding good evidence. Choose those which are relevant, not necessarily those which are easy.

Integrating a Quotation:

Use an introductory phrase: In the opening scene of Wieland, Brown writes, "I feel little reluctance in complying with your request" (pg. #).

An assertion of your own followed by a colon: Fitzgerald gives Nick a muted tribute to the hero: "Gatsby turned out all right at the end" (pg. #).

An assertion of your own with integrated quoted material: For the narrator of "Bartleby the Scrivener," who believes that "the easiest of way of life is the best" (2), Bartleby passively confronts and confounds his way of life.

Explaining a Quotation:

Identify key words that pertain to your point: As Brown's use of "feel" and "comply" suggests, Brown opens Wieland by asserting Clara's acquiescence to the process of storytelling.

Rephrase the quote's meaning within the context of your argument: In other words, Nick compliments Gatsby, but only through a melancholic acceptance of his fate.

Say what the quote shows, signifies, implies, suggests: The narrator's philosophy of life demonstrates an absolute unwillingness to resist the pressures of nineteenth-century U.S. society.

Punctuation and Style:

Commas and periods go inside the quotation marks. The narrator argues that "the easiest way of life is the best," and he then continues by describing himself as a "safe man" (2-3).

Question marks and exclamation points go outside quotation marks if they are a part of your argument. What does it mean to describe yourself as a "safe man"?
