In what ways is character burdened by the past in some form

Problem: Gothic Horror

As discussed in the module overview above, gothic horror (as a genre) tends to feature characters whose past haunts their present- or where the past at least looms ominously in their lives in a way that impacts their choices (enabling them or inhibiting them). Read the very first story "I am the Brother of XX (pg.5 to pg.17)" and argue how this idea applies or one or more of its characters. In what ways is this character burdened by the past in some form (past memories, past choices, past events, etc.) and how does this burden impact their present choices or actions?
