In what ways indigenous peoples resisted globalization

Assignment task: Cross-Culture Comparison:

Instructions:

For this final cross-cultural comparison, you will address the following question: In what ways have indigenous peoples resisted globalization and cultural change through religion?  By comparing three societies in the text of the Schemas of Culture - (1) Haitians, (2) Hmong, and (3) Ojibwa.  Each has its own chapter in the book.

As you read the chapters on each of these societies, you will compare their religions before and after globalization.  You may wish to treat these religious practices as two different cultural features of each culture - namely, religion before globalization and colonialism, and religion after globalization and colonialism.  Your goal is to try to highlight any differences as well as any evidence of continuity that can be seen as attempts to preserve cultural traditions and resist change.

To assist you, a blank comparison chart has been provided with this task.  The chart can be printed and filled out either as a Word file or as a pdf file.  The chart can be completed by placing the assignment question at the top of the comparison chart and then placing the name of each community at the top of the first two columns.  The two cultural attributes you will be comparing (i.e. religion before globalization and colonialism, and religion after globalization and colonialism) can be used to label the classes.  Once you name the chart, you can populate it with the information you read from the CULTURE SKETCHES text.  Please be sure to include page number references for any information you disclose about the three cultural traits in each community.
