Choose one character from one of our class readings to explore in-depth, using Cohen's "Seven Theses" critical article to help support your arguments. In what ways does a nuanced theoretical approach to the "monster" figure help us better understand some of our foundational cultural texts? Is this character a "monster" at all? should feature a clear thesis/argument/position and copious close-reading moments that help us dig into the text as you flesh out support for your argument. also engage with the Cohen article and critical theory, 1-7 but keep in mind that this isn't a paper about Cohen's arguments--you'll just want to use some of these ideas to help you as you make your claims stronger. Choose Grendel, in baewolf and Caliban, and Prospero from tempest just stay focused on your position and on your argument as you build your case. Taking an unconventional approach may prove more interesting or exciting, and I welcome innovation and exploration, provided it is supported by evidence!
