In this unit, you are articulating a specific plan that an organization can use to remedy a problem related to your semester topic or a social justice issue. The audience you are speaking to should be located in the local region, so that you can physically hand somebody (e.g. legislator, university administrator, employer) a copy of this paper. (The local area is University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa). The goal is for that person to read your paper and be inspired to put your plan in action.
You will need to give background, persuade your reader to care, and propose specific actions (based on academic research and case studies). You will need to back up all your claims and attribute sources so that your reader has context to understand them. You will want to show that other places have done similar actions to combat the social injustice, and you will want to explain how these places have gone about it. You will also want to explain the differences between what you are suggesting and what has been done before. It is important to remember that what works in one place, doesn't necessarily work in another. Local cultures, histories, and geographies have to be taken into account.
Your essay must include at least:
· 1 new interview (with an expert on your topic),
· 2 new academic articles, and
· 3 new newspaper articles, podcasts, or TED talks.
You can (and should) use past sources in addition the above. For this essay to be successful, you will need to use the claim, support, explain pattern. You will also want a comprehensive thesis that explores opposing arguments. Your essay should explain the significance of the topic to your reader and answer the "so-what" question.
An example would be getting alcohol out of fraternity houses.
