In this assignment the student will demonstrate their knowledge of architectural theory by developing a detailed critique of an architectural work and demonstrating its significance to ONE of the movements or themes that have been discussed in the lectures.

On completion of this assignment the student should be able to:

• read, understand and articulate an architectural theory
• write in a scholarly and succinct manner; and
• understand the connection between architectural theory, architectural design and broader urban and social issues relating to the built environment

Assignment brief:

You are to use one of themes or movements in the ARBE3200 lecture series to analyse ONE architectural focus project or case study (a built or hypothetical building or space). Choose an architectural project with characteristics that appear to relate to or resonate with the key issues or attributes of ONE of the movements or themes. Your emphasis should be on the application of architectural theory and the way that theoretical ideas intersect with the practice or production of architecture. Accordingly, the review should first identify the key issues or attributes of the chosen movement / theme, which are then used to frame the discussion of the case study project (and its important characteristics). The essay should refer to: the relevance of the work to the theory of architecture, and its social and political context; the discourse on and about the theme and the project; in order to critique and interpret the work in a scholarly manner. Your reading should be broad ranging and widely referenced with respect to both the selected movement or theme, and case study. This is NOT a summary or a general overview of the case study, and you should focus on its contribution or relevance to theories of architecture. Your review should be no more than 3000 words and should be written in a scholarly manner and fully referenced-including in-text citations for both quotes and major points following a recognized model (such as the Chicago Manual of Style). Students can continue to refer to the movement or theme 12 ARBE3200 History and Theory in the Built Environment 3 - Course Outline 2014 associated with the author examined in assignment 1. Include a reference list at the end of the essay.
