Assignment Task: Authentic learning project

Task details:

In Task, you will plan and develop an authentic learning project that requires students to use technology as cognitive tools on a topic of your choice that can be shared with and implemented by other teachers. You will also create a narrated online video about your project, to be presented online at the end of the semester and an example end product using an appropriate technology. All the work you do in this task will be presented on a public online site that you will create for this task.

Part A - Project planning:

Use the Task Project Plan template to record your authentic learning project plan and submit your project plan before the due date (due date & resources will be available on LMS).

  • Topic: Select a topic that you would be interested in teaching your future students that would be delivered over a number of teaching weeks (refer to ideas on LMS).
  • Curriculum: Identify the appropriate curriculum content and elaborations that your project will address
  • Learning outcome: Write a learning outcome (or outcomes) to articulate the knowledge and skills that students would be expected to demonstrate at the end of the project.
  • Authentic task: Identify a real-world task that would enable students to use technology as cognitive tools to support their learning and demonstrate the specified learning outcome(s).
  • Real-world presentation: Identify how students will present their work to an authentic audience
  • End-product technology: Decide which technology students will use to create a meaningful end product demonstrate achievement of the learning outcome(s).
  • Project plan: Submit your Project Plan by the due date (on LMS).

1. Explain how the task will assist students to develop the knowledge and skills (learning outcomes) expected to be demonstrated at the end of the project.

2. Describe how the task addresses the principles of authentic learning.

3. Explain how the selected technologies will support student learning.

Part B - Project development:

Create an online site (e.g., a website or blog) to present your authentic learning project to a global educational community. Note: Do not use Google sites. You must select a different website creation technology for Task.

Online site pages: Your online site must be publicly accessible on the Internet and contain a maximum of 5 pages.

a. Home page: Explain why you have created your site and what viewers can expect to find on your site.

b. About me page: Include: your name, contact details and a brief biography to give your site credibility.

c. Project overview page: Provide a succinct overview of the topics/concepts covered in your project, and explain how the activities students complete address the curriculum and principles of authentic learning.

d. Project content: Provide sufficient information to enable other teachers to implement your authentic learning project in their classrooms (maximum 2 pages).

Images: Include images to support your information and to make your pages more appealing to your readers (text only pages can be quite boring).

Resources: Include active hyperlinks to resources such as: Scootle objects, websites, video or audio podcasts, documents (e.g., handouts, templates, articles or instructions, assessment tools etc.) and social networking tools (if relevant) that you could use to implement your project.

Ethical use: Abide by copyright laws and ensure all information, images and other media you use are attributed appropriately.

Create two (2) educational online resources for your topic:

a. Resource 1: Video overview - Create a short narrated online video (maximum 3 minutes) to introduce students to your project and explain what they are expected to do to demonstrate achievement of the learning outcome(s). Link or embed your introduction video on your Home page.

b. Resource 2: Example end product - Create an example of an end product that students will create using an appropriate technology to demonstrate their understanding of the concepts covered in your project and their achievement of the learning outcome(s). Link or embed your example end product on your project overview page on the group wiki.

Copyright: Add a license to your site advising others how they may reuse your work.

Responsible use: Proof read your entire site. Check that you have not included any "private" information, and that you have used non-discriminatory language, correct sentence structure, spelling and grammar.

Task resources: Further advice about suggested technologies and example resources are provided on the LMS and in the lectures to help you complete this task.
