Discussion - Volcanoes
In Chapter 12, we examined how magma rises through Earth's crust, emerges onto its surface as lava, and cools into solid volcanic rock. We saw how plate tectonic processes and mantle convection explain volcanism at plate boundaries and at "hot spots" within plates. We saw how volcanoes interact with other components of the Earth system, particularly the hydrosphere and the atmosphere. Finally, we considered their destructive power as well as the potential benefits they can provide for human society.
Choose a topic from Chapter 12 (attached) that you find to be especially interesting. Do a little more research on it, and tell the rest of us what you have found.
1. Read more in the textbook: Some of the topics in Chapter 12 are covered in more depth in other chapters of the textbook. You can tell us about what you found.
2. Find a news story: Type a keyword, plus the word "News" from your topic into a Google search window. You should see a list of news stories about that topic. Describe the article or highlight at least one interesting thing that you learned from the article. Be sure to include the link, so we can read it.
