Evidence-based practice (EBP) projects do not always produce statistically significant results, but that does not mean the project lacks value. Statistical significance and clinical significance are both important when evaluating outcomes, although they measure different things. Statistical significance focuses on whether results are likely due to the intervention rather than chance and is commonly measured using p-values and statistical testing (Sharma, 2021). However, statistical significance can be affected by factors such as sample size, meaning a project may not reach statistical significance even when meaningful improvements are seen.
Clinical significance focuses on whether an intervention creates meaningful improvements in patient care or healthcare outcomes. In nursing practice, this is often the more important measure because it looks at real-world impact, such as improved safety, better patient experiences, or increased efficiency (AbdulRaheem, 2024). A project may not show strong statistical significance but still positively affect patients and staff.
In my capstone project involving emergency department fast-track implementation and improved triage protocols, clinical significance can be used to support positive outcomes by focusing on measurable improvements in patient care and workflow. For example, decreased wait times, improved patient satisfaction, faster triage-to-provider times, and improved patient flow would demonstrate meaningful progress even if statistical significance is limited. These outcomes directly affect patient experience and emergency department efficiency.
