Important parts of road pavements:

Prime Coat : Application of a low viscosity bituminous binder over a granular base to fill up the voids.

Tack Coat : Application of bituminous binder over a primed granular layer or an existing bituminous surface to provide a bond between it and the bituminous layers coming above it.

Surface Dressing : An application of a thin film of bituminous layer followed by stone aggregates rolled into firm position.

Premix Carpet : An open graded thin premix surfacing course. Bituminous Macadam : An open graded bituminous base course.

Grouted or : An open graded bituminous course in which Penetration Macadam the binder is sprayed to fill up the voids.

Contraction Joint : A transverse joint in concrete pavement intended to relieve tensile stresses caused by temperature changes.

Dowel Bar :   A load transfer device at transverse joints.

Longitudinal Joint  : A joint in the longitudinal direction in concrete pavements wider than single lane.

Tie Rod : A reinforcing bar across a longitudinal joint to prevent separation of adjoining slabs.

Expansion Joint : A joint provided to allow for the expansion of concrete slabs.

Slip Form Paver : A machine that lays concrete pavement without the need for side forms.
