Topic: The palm oil story highlights an important and challenging dilemma: often when developed countries start limiting imports from a particular region or country because of sustainability concerns, they take away local jobs from that area. How can you reconcile this conflict?

It is evident that jobs are important for a country's economy, growth, and personal well-being of its residents. Families around the world depend on their jobs to help financially take care of those they care for. However, in many situations like in the Palm Oil industry, people are forced to work in an environmentally unfriendly career to earn money. Consequently, if companies from other countries limit or refuse business with the environmentally damaging palm oil industry, hundreds of thousands of working class individuals will be left unemployed. Therefore, it is not a viable solution to simply reduce or eliminate job opportunities with these individuals. Instead, environmentally friendly careers such as solar, wind, hydropower careers should be introduced by the government or private sectors to those dependent on the Palm Oil industry. The same can be seen with the coal industry. The coal industry has provided jobs for the working class for decades. This has led to a dependency between the workers and coal industry despite the numerous environmental and health consequences. The introduction of environmentally career is a tangible solution as it will provide a living to those in need of a good paying job as well as being environmentally beneficial. Working with the environment rather than against it will lead to a much brighter future.
