My current proposed problem statement is: It is not known if or to what degree the implementation of pre-session pairing (PSP) by behavior technicians influences instructional engagement and rates of problem behavior among children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) receiving applied behavior analysis services in a clinical setting in Leander.
Several refinements were made to the problem statement throughout this course. Earlier versions focused broadly on antecedent strategies used with children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. However, instructor feedback and further literature review helped narrow the focus to pre-session pairing, an antecedent intervention commonly discussed in applied behavior analysis but inconsistently implemented in practice. The statement was also revised to follow doctoral formatting requirements by using the required "It is not known if or to what degree..." phrasing and clearly identifying measurable variables. These revisions strengthened alignment between the problem statement, research questions, and the proposed research design.
Based on this refined problem statement and the design requirements at Grand Canyon University, I have selected a quantitative correlational design. A correlational design is appropriate because the study seeks to examine the relationship between the independent variable (implementation of pre-session pairing) and the dependent variables (instructional engagement and problem behavior) without manipulating variables experimentally. Quantitative correlational research is commonly used to examine relationships among measurable variables using statistical analysis (John W. Creswell & Cheryl N. Poth, 2018).
One important concept emphasized in this course was the importance of methodological alignment, meaning the problem statement, purpose statement, research questions, variables, and analytic methods must logically correspond. Understanding this concept strengthened my decision to select a correlational design because the research problem focuses on examining relationships between measurable behavioral variables rather than exploring lived experiences or testing an intervention experimentally. Additionally, correlational designs allow for statistical analyses such as regression or correlation to evaluate relationships among variables, which support the objectives of this study (Joseph F. Hair Jr. et al., 2020). Need Assignment Help?
