Task:

1. Draw up a list of key parameters you feel would be relevant in making decisions about number, size and location of warehouse facilities. Give a brief explanation why each parameter is helpful. Post these to the discussion board.

2. Imagine that you are Bobbies' new logistics manager. Produce a warehouse layout document that responds to Bobbies' business requirements. Post your warehouse layout document and explain which parameters most influenced your design or why you made particular choices about the design. Post this early in the week.

Reviewing warehouse design layouts:

Later in the week, review the warehouse layout design documents and consider the following questions:

Are there any common themes? Are the layouts notably varied?

Were there any constraining factors or key parameters?

What benefits and challenges could the various layout designs bring?

Could the designed facilities be expanded upon in the future, as the business grows?

Activity2 : How hungry are you?

Purpose:

To consider the practical applications of technical solutions.

Background:

In the Preparation section this week you looked at factors to consider in warehouse design. In addition to the content in the readings, you may have related work experience, general knowledge or assumptions that may assist you in thinking about effective warehouse design for the needs of a business.

In the Preparation section this week, we looked at a range of technologies including inventory management, scheduling and picking technologies. Assume that Bobbies has a range of pies, which could be a hearty snack for a study break. The only problem is they're on the top level of a seven-tier-high shelving unit in a freezer environment...

Task:

1. Choose a technological solution that Bobbies might consider to help them operate their warehouse.

2. Conduct some further research to learn more about the technology.

3. Explain what the technology is, what you have learnt from research and why it would be helpful to Bobbies. Take the opportunity in your post to practice Harvard-style citation/s and referencing.

Trends in technology:

1. Review the technologies you have all posted to the discussion board.

2. Ask a question or two about a technology you'd like to learn more about from a peer.

How hungry are you really?

If your office is on the ground floor and your hearty pie snack is on level 7 in the freezer environment, who can post a way to get to your pie using:

The least number of technologies?

10 technologies?
