Imagine that a close friend goes to a Doctor’s appointment for a normal check-up. As a part of their appointment, they mention that they have been feeling sad lately. Not having too much time to spend, the Doctor suggests that your friend may be experiencing clinical depression and recommends that they begin taking an anti-depressant medication. Not knowing what to do, your friend calls you after the appointment. In light of the research we have discussed on depression and antidepressant medication, what advice could you give your friend? Specifically, what could you tell your friend to help them decide whether to accept the Doctor’s (a) diagnosis that they are clinically depressed and (b) recommendation to begin taking an antidepressant?
