Consider and then comment on the issue of emotional labor in the culture of capitalism, including how the emotional labor can "spill over" beyond the immediate field of market exchange and paid labor (ie into everyday life, personal relationships, and within the self) using the psychoanalytic "defense mechanisms" covered in class to guide your analysis. Making connections between the emotional techniques and habits outlined in The Managed Heart and characters/scenes of the film American Beauty, illustrate how the spill over occurs and the implications it has for our emotional lives and contemporary culture in general.
