Assignment:
General Directions: For each of the exercises below, you will be asked to identify grammatical elements; any writing you provide (such as the explanations for Part I) should be in complete, grammatically correct sentences. You will be assessed not only on identifying and providing the correct information, but also on how you present that information in your own writing.
Part I. Parts of Speech
Identify the part of speech for the italicized words in the following sentences. Explain the basis of your choice. Describe as much as you can about the word in order to support your identification.
1. That operation is medically unnecessary.
2. He had to be taken to the hospital due to a medical emergency.
3. We had a totally awesome time last night.
4. The total for the bill came to only two hundred dollars.
5. The blind person walked across the street with a seeing-eye dog.
6. The driver of the car said that he ran off the road because he was blinded by the low-setting sun.

Part II. Sentence Patterns

Identify the sentence pattern of the main clause(s) in each of the examples below. Underline dependent clauses and identify the type of each: noun, adjective, or adverb.
1. While I waited at the airport with my friend, he was listening to his iPod, so I let him know that his flight had arrived.
2. The next note in the description of the scientific report stated that the experiment had failed.
3. The newscaster announced that the city councilman had lost his bid for reelection.
