Part I. Parts of Speech

Identify the part of speech for the italicized words in the following sentences. Explain the basis of your choice. Describe as much as you can about the word in order to support your identification.

1. That operation is medically unnecessary.
2. He had to be taken to the hospital due to a medical emergency.
3. We had a totally awesome time last night.
4. The total for the bill came to only two hundred dollars.
5. The blind person walked across the street with a seeing-eye dog.
6. The driver of the car said that he ran off the road because he was blinded by the low-setting sun.
7. Close the blinds.

Part II. Sentence Patterns

For each of the five sentence patterns, write out the pattern. Provide three examples for each pattern. For these three sentences within each pattern, you will want to use different verb tenses.

2. The next note in the description of the scientific report stated that the experiment had failed.
3. The newscaster announced that the city councilman had lost his bid for reelection.
