CLO Business Decision-Making Project Part1

I have identified a business problem with the Breakfast on Broadway Café, and in this paper, I will be identifying a research variable that can be measured with types of data collection. I will find different methods for collecting a suitable sample of either qualitative or quantitative data, and show how I will know if the data I present will be valid and reliable.

Breakfast on Broadway Cafe

Breakfast on Broadway Café is a little café located in Colorado. It is locally owned by a gentleman that grew up on a small farm in Colorado that had a vision. His idea was to create a family atmosphere in his café; which is great but times have changed. Over the past three years, the cafes sales revenue, and customer base has dropped drastically due to the owner's failure to adjust to daily demands and refused to modernize its business practices. Therefore, the café is stuck in its manual processes and is unable to improve.

Breakfast on Broadway Café's Problem

The main problem affecting the Breakfast on Broadway Café is technology. Most of its advertisement is by word of mouth instead of utilizing social media and the Internet. Due to the Breakfast on Broadway Café not stepping out of its comfort zone they are continuously losing customers to businesses like I Hop and Village Inn. In fact, I Hop just recently opened a restaurant within a mile of his café.

The Breakfast on Broadway Café could attract more customers if the owner redesigned his mission statement by implementing new technology solutions. Implementing new technology such as wireless Internet and a point of sale system will allow the Café to analyze and store their data for future retrieval. Adding this new technology the café will be able to analyze and track information regarding their products, employees and customers. Having access to this information the café can make strategic decisions to better their business.

Data Collection Methods

There are several methods that the café can use to track data on how many customers they have. These methods include questionnaires, interviews with customers and customer observation. Depending on the research questions information on the customers can be qualitative or quantitative. Therefore, the café wants to make sure they use the correct method. Also, the café needs to be sure to collect data very frequently to track enough information. For example, if the café wants to track data for customer monitoring they will want to gather data continuously so that they can detect any changes in numbers. By doing this, it allows the café to make changes when necessary.

Research Variable

With any business, the number of customers you get will vary depending on conditions of your business. Its obvious customers will be more attracted to a café or restaurant if they have discounts or rewards. Also, technology and favorability play a significant role on customer loyalty. Having Wi-Fi hotspots in café's attracts students and tech savvy customers.

Questionnaire

Questionnaires are the cheapest way the Breakfast on Broadway Café can collect data. Also, questionnaires are the easiest way for the owner to analyze the data received. Questionnaires area an excellent way to gather data on the customers level of satisfaction, how the café can improve their service and any other comments or questions the customers may have.

Interviews

The ownercan do interviews with his customers, so he can address any needs or concerns his customers may have. Having face to face meetings with their customers allows the café to gain useful information, and have a more personable relationship with their customers. Having direct interviews allows the owner to gather qualitative data about his customers.

Observation

The information collected through observation is qualitative and can be measurable for analysis. Observation is a study that allows the café to study a subject. The café can observe how their customers use the Wi-Fi they provide, so they have the data needed to know if the Wi-Fi is bringing in customers. Through observation this allows the café to gauge the level of satisfaction from the customer through evaluation. The most appropriate ways to gather customer data from quantitative purposes is through structured observation. However, gathering information regarding natural occurrences, it's best to use unstructured observation.

Validity and Reliability of the Collected Data

For Breakfast on Broadway Café to know for sure the data they collected is valid and reliable they need to make sure they select the proper instruments to gather their data. For example, when collecting quantitative data, they should be sure the instruments they are using is field tested for accuracy ((Jaggia, S & Kelly, A. 2014, p. 20). Regardless of the information collected the measurement must produce reliable and valid responses. The café will need different samples from customers to be successful in obtaining valid and reliable data, so they can compare and analyze the data they gathered.

Conclusion

Bottom line, to ensure competitiveness the Breakfast on Broadway Café needs to introduce updated technology in their daily operations. More customers will spend their time in the café if they have access to Wi-Fi; which in return will boost the café's revenue and performance.
