Trixie is 8 years old and in the third grade. She is an average student although in the past several months, her school performance has deteriorated. Up until recently, Trixie has had a number of other little girls at school with whom she had good friendships. She would frequently ask her teacher what she could do to help, and was the self-appointed assistant for a classmate who had extensive special needs; Trixie seemed to be very compassionate and concerned about helping take care of him. Recently, Trixie has been spending a lot of time in the nurse's office with stomachaches or requesting that the school secretaries call her mother at work to make sure her mother is all right. Her mother has requested that Trixie not be allowed to call her unless it is an absolute emergency because her employer is angry about the frequent phone calls. She cannot afford to lose her job because she is the family's sole support since the divorce. Dad never contacts the children, nor does he provide child support. Trixie once came to the office during her lunch period hysterical and convinced that she was choking on a Fig Newton. She cried for almost an hour before calming down enough to return to class. Her behavior is quite a contrast to that of her older sister's. Julia is in the seventh grade, very popular and involved in many extracurricular activities even though she has been diagnosed with a potentially serious heart murmur.
