At the end of this assignment, the student should be able to:

• Identify the journal of the professional association in the student's field of study

• Write a journal abstract of an article

Overview

Professional association journals communicate information about health care advancements, new technology, changing regulations, and so on. This assignment will familiarize students with the contents of their professional journal and require students to prepare a journal abstract (summary) of a selected article.

Instructions

1. Select your professional association's journal from Table 2-2.

2. Select an article from your professional association's journal. Locate a journal by:

a. Going to its website (many journals are posted online)

b. Borrowing a journal through interlibrary loan (e.g., college library, local library)

c. Borrowing a journal from a professional in your field of study or your instructor

NOTE: Borrowing a journal from a professional in your field of study is an excellent way to start the networking process that will lead to employment. However, if you borrow a journal, return it promptly and include a thank-you note.

NOTE: Student members of professional associations receive professional journals. However, it usually takes eight weeks to receive your first journal.

3. Read an article published in a recent edition of your professional association's journal.

4. Prepare a one-page, double-spaced summary of the journal article, which includes the following information:

a. Name of article
b. Name of author
c. Name of journal
d. Date of journal

e. Journal article summary (paragraph format, double-spaced), which summarizes the article's content. Do not include your opinion about content of the article.
