1) Identify the author's thesis statement. Consider whether or not the thesis is clear and understandable. If it is, rewrite it in the space below. If it is not, write a possible suggestion.

2) Does the thesis answer all aspects of the essay prompt? Does it show an arguable position that addresses a controversial topic? Is it absolutely clear? Please explain.

3) Does the author introduce the text(s) he/she is writing about (such as the story "The Things They Carried" by Tim O'Brien) by listing their titles and the authors' names? Does the author mention the full names of the authors of the texts he/she is writing about?

4) Does the author describe the text(s) he/she is writing about? How clearly were they described? Suggest at least two ways in which the author may improve on this description.

5) Overall, does the author provide a sense of understanding with regards to the text(s) he/she is writing about? How so?

6) Does the author use direct quotations from sources to explain his/her main points? If yes, does he/she do so effectively? Explain. If no, suggest at least two connections the author can make to the reading.

7) How does the author consider the audience (i.e. peers, instructor)? In other words, does the author provide enough information about his or her chosen sources for readers who may not be familiar with these texts? Explain. If the author does not consider the audience, suggest at least one way in which he/she can.
