Identify the adaptation potential

Assignment:

Stage 1

Prepare a scheme design for the building/s using your Stage 1 proposals as the basis of the Stage 2 submission. This submission should include the following items:

1. Detailed scheme drawings for each major services item.

2. Detailed information of energy consumption and carbon emission for the building(s), including costs. This should examine any specific design proposals made in order to maximise sustainability.

3. Identification of the adaptation potential or limitations of the scheme design.

4. Detailed plant room drawings.

5. Cost estimate for the services element of the scheme.

6. Construction plan relating the services elements to the building construction plan prepared as part of the collaborative project.

Feedback will be given on your stage 1 submission. At your discretion, you may reflect the feedback in your stage 2 design. Generally speaking, changes in design are not permitted and, as such, any changes deemed necessary for progression of the project should be formally approved by the course tutor.

The submission should be in the form of a report plus drawings. The word count for Stage 2 should not exceed 5000. Students are required to submit one copy of the report that will become University property. It is recommended that students retain a copy.

SUBMISSIONS

Drawings will be marked as an integral part of the submission, and should therefore be such that technical detail is clearly and accurately presented. All drawings should be adequately dimensioned i.e. sizes for key elements of services provision should be identified. Where, for example, the upper levels of a building require duplicate services provision, only one drawing should be included, and students should clearly identify the floors for which such a design approach is applicable.

Drawings should be presented in landscape format and may be either A3 or A2, depending upon the level of detail incorporated. Stuart Telford in the resource centre can give advice on how the print/use the title blocks. CAD drawings are permitted, but students should note that technical support may not be available. Note that your name must not appear on any drawings.

All relevant journals, texts, standards and regulations are to be consulted. References must be provided in both Stage 1 and Stage 2 submissions. Reference may also be made to manufacturer's catalogues and/or data. Where commercial software packages have been used to assist in establishing a particular aspect of the design, input design criteria and results should be discussed. The inclusion of data ‘print-outs' is discouraged.
