AIM:

To develop skills on search strategies for research papers and assessing the quality of the study paper in order to expand the scientific knowledge evidence based practice through critiquing and appraising a research report.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

- Use guidelines in the critique of research reports and make constructive rather than destructive criticism.

- Evaluate aspects of a study to judge the merits, significance, and limitations for the application to practice.

- Develop search strategy skills and critical appraising the evidence

INSTRUCTIONS- Assignment should be submitted in TIMES NEW ROMAN, font size 12, Line spacing 1.5 1-inch margin on 4 sides and justified in format - Utilize not less than 5 updated articles not earlier than 2007 to support the information - Use system for referencing

GUIDELINES FOR THE CONDUCT OF A WRITTEN RESEARCH CRITIQUE:

- General introduction
o Understanding of research o Purpose of critiquing the article with the evidence

- Title oDoes it accurately describe the article (Title should not more than 12 words)if the title in the article you select is 12 or more (make critique )

- Abstract - o Is it representative of the article

- Introduction - o Does it make the purpose of the article clear?

- Statement of the problem - o Is the problem properly introduced?

- Purpose of the study o Has the reason for conducting the research been explained

- Research question
o Is the research question clearly defined and if not, how it affects the study quality?

- Literature review
o Is the literature review relevant to the study, comprehensive, and include recent research?
o Does the literature review support the need for the study?

- Methods
o Is the design appropriate for the study? o Was a data collection instrument needed? o How were data collected? o Were reliability and validity accounted for?

- Sample
o Who/ what makes up the sample?
o Are there clear inclusion or exclusion criteria? o What method of sampling was used?
o Are there elements of bias in the sampling?
o Does the sample fit with the research design and is the size sufficient?

- Analysis
o Is the analytical approach consistent with the study questions and research design?

- Results
o Are the results presented clearly in the text, tables and figures?
o Are the statistics clearly explained?

- Discussion -
o Are the results explained in relationship to the theoretical framework, research questions, and the significance to clinical practice?

- Ethical considerations
o Were the issues of informed consent, confidentiality, addressed? o Was any harm or discomfort balanced against any benefits?
o Did an ethics committee consider the study?

- Limitations
o Are the limitations presented and their implications discussed? o Are the findings related to the aims?

- Conclusion
o Are there recommendations for practice, future research, and policymakers?
o Are the recommendations relevant, specific and feasible?

- Referencing skills
o Observe consistency in the use of referencing guideline
o Use of grammar, spelling and punctuations
