Assignment task: The cell is the basic unit of life. It is a highly organized structure composed of organelles, cytoplasm, and cytoskeletal structures and surrounded by a plasma membrane. Each of these structures has a specific function necessary for the proper development and function of tissues, organs, and organ systems. Dysfunction of cellular components may not only affect the individual cell but may affect the entire organism, resulting in a clinical disorder.
You will be assigned the (Niemann-Pick Type C) disorder that is a result of cellular dysfunction. Please review the functions of the cell's organelles in your reading material "Biology of humans concepts, applications and issues 6th edition", chapter 3 The Cell. Then, address the questions below for the assigned disorder.
1. Provide a brief overview of your assigned disorder, including the major signs/symptoms associated with the disease.
2. Identify the organelle that is affected by your assigned disorder. Keep in mind that you are talking about an organelle within the cell and not about an organ.
3. Discuss the normal function of this organelle and how the disorder disrupts the normal function of this organelle.
4. Discuss how the signs/symptoms of the disease relate to the dysfunction of the affected organelle.
