Scenario
You are on the Health Policy Committee of your State Nursing Organization. You have been asked to take the lead in developing a coalition on a key health policy issue. The desired result is the development of a policy briefing that can be used to persuade legislators to sponsor your recommended policy changes.
Choose an issue that you wish to support. This issue could relate to health coverage for child health, a mandatory vaccination policy, mental health/nursing support for schools and adolescent health, women's health issues, mental health parity, elder care, HIV/AIDs screening in minority communities, reimbursement for telehealth services, NP scope of practice, etc. While you'll be focusing on U.S. health policy, consider whether your work may have a broader global impact.
1) Identify the issue and explain the overall significance of this issue and the population that will benefit
2) Provide reliable data to support the need for legislative changes to policy or regulation
3) Identify inter-professional organizations and individuals that should be part of your coalition
4) Describe their expertise, roles, and potential contributions to the development of a policy paper
5) Describe how nursing leadership is important to the composition of a health policy coalition
6) Provide a Framework for the Working group with purpose, goals, and timelines
Provide information as you were making a policy brief on the issue that contains the following elements:
1) Title
2) Executive Summary (one page to be used as a summary handout)
3) Rationale or action on the problem (the need to do something different)
4) Proposed Policy Option(s) (what to do)
5) Policy Recommendations (how to implement)
6) Sources consulted or recommended
7) Link to original research/ analysis
8) Contact details for the spokesperson
9) Identify targeted legislators and why they may be likely to support your policy changes and explain why they are an appropriate choice.
