Identify how they got in that bad position

Problem:

My friend and co-worker that I volunteer at the women's shelter with is such a huge motivation to me. She is a case manager for women who are victims of domestic violence. She is so strong, courageous, and empathetic. This rubs off on people. She is able to hold these women's hands through some of the worst experiences of their life. Sadly, being abused isn't the hard part. It's picking up the pieces of your family afterward. Getting the children counseling for what they have been through or seen. Moving away, and starting over without the person who was probably the breadwinner in the family. These women look up to her, and it's as if her demeanor and strength is just natural. She is such an encourager, and she never puts anyone down for what they have done, she only motivates them to move forward, and to identify how they got in that bad position in the first place where can I get some references or recourses that goes with this discussion?
