Identify five questions that must be answered in the meeting

Problem

The Case: You are a 1st grade teacher and it is November. You just received a transfer student from a local school. Roland is male, African American, and 6 years old. He has asthma that is triggered through allergies and sometimes exercise. His parents are coming to the school to meet with you (his main teacher), the school nurse, the guidance counselor, the physical education teacher, and the principal in order to discuss his health plan. His past school reports that he often visits the nurse, misses school, and sometimes avoids physical education class.

Write a report describing how you would handle this conference by addressing the following points:

1. Be prepared. Identify specific information about asthma (definition, symptoms, treatment).

2. List at least 5 objectives that you have for the meeting.

3. Identify at least 5 questions that must be answered in this meeting.

4. Explain the role that you, as his teacher, plan to take in implementing his health plan. Remember the definition of health and consider how a chronic illness impacts learning. Keep in mind Roland's physical, social, and emotional needs. It is important that you convey to the parents that you have confidence and sufficient knowledge to handle Roland's illness.
