The leadership of this facility has decided they would like to take the existing paper-based consumer education pamphlets on tobacco education and deploy them to the ambulatory population of CHS who visit the doctor offices and surgery center. They would like to use the informatics tools, principles, and content available through smokefree gov. as a basis for this education. In order to identify patients who can benefit from this informatics solution, they asked administrators in the physician offices and the surgery center to print a report of patients who currently use tobacco from the CHS electronic health record (EHR). In the Hierarchy of Informatics diagram presented in chapter 35 of our text, the Cherry Health System (CHS) tobacco informatic solution would be associated within the Public Health and the Clinical Informatics domains (Nelson & Staggers, 2018). The tobacco informatic solution would fall under the Public Health domain because it would be utilized to inform the public populations on tobacco education which is a public health issue. As to the domain of Clinical Informatics, clinical information would need to be gathered, analyzed, and evaluated to determine which part of the patient population of Cherry Health System would benefit from this information. Tailoring the demographic to those who have a use of tobacco products or are exposed to them. This would eliminate distribution to those unaffected or not exposed to tobacco use.
