1) Identify and explain examples of how challenges to authority shaped the development of the United States, from the pre-colonial era through the early years of the new nation and on to the Civil War. What forms of authority were being challenged (political, legal, religious, economic, military, racial, gender) and why? Who made these challenges, what were their motives and intentions, and how effective or ineffective were their efforts?
