Assignment Task: To do this you need to first identify a social justice issue that is affecting a specific community in the US.
Then, you will analyze your issue in light of our major course themes, concepts, and perspectives. Last, you will formulate an argument that considers the framing and ethical considerations of this issue and how to address this issue in U.S. society today.
Some general examples of social justice issues include: poverty, food insecurity, housing, environmental racism, the death penalty, the bail bond system, environmental rights, access to health care, labor laws, worker's rights, civil rights, access to education, and many more.
Oftentimes, these issues are driven by racism, sexism, ageism, ableism, and heterosexism.
However, they can also be driven by xenophobia (fear of people from other countries), ethnocentrism (evaluating other cultures by the standards of one's own culture), and neocolonialism (the exploitation of economic, political, and cultural forces to control or influence other countries, societies, or communities). We will engage with only some of these issues directly in our course material. You are encouraged to pursue a topic that interests you and/or that aligns with your major/minor academic interests.
Your task in this assignment is to mobilize the critical toolkit of the concepts and theories found throughout our class materials to present an ethical stance regarding what should be done (i.e. your own argument) to enhance equity and to challenge structural inequalities in American society.
1. Present your working thesis statement. This should include the issue you are addressing and what ethical model you are using.
2. Examples of 6 potential sources. These do not have to be ones you are using, only examples.
3. Start doing a little bit of general reading about your topic. Come up with two or three good questions that you may try to address in your paper.
