Problem: Theories of Atonement.
There are many ideas of atonement and what that means for our salvation. To measure whether each concept is theologically sound, there are 4 pillars of atonement. These include the love of God, the holiness of God, the sinfulness of humans, and the incarnation. I believe that the theory of atonement which satisfies all 4 pillars and therefore resonates most with me is the penal substitutionary atonement theory. This theory acknowledges that humanity is sinful, and that because of God's perfect holiness, sin must be judged and cannot be ignored. However, because of God's loving kindness, He sent Jesus as the incarnate of Himself to bear the penalty of sin. Because of His wonderful sacrifice, humanity can now live in fellowship with God (Kim). Scriptures that support the concept of penal substitutionary atonement include Isaiah 53:4-6, which describes Jesus taking on the suffering for our transgressions. Romans 3:23-26 further support this idea, as it acknowledges the vast sinfulness of humanity, but the redemption that was accounted for on behalf of Christ's sacrifice.
