Ideal gas in a whole room

We are taught that the gases do not have a specific volume, but they occupy all the space that is given to them. Why do we say that 1mol of an ideal gas occupies 22,4L in STP? How is that possible? If we put 1mol of ideal gas in a whole room, will it just occupy 22,4L???
