Baker, the Anthologist. A Novel
In order to help Paul Chowder with his task of editing a new anthology of rhyming verse, groups of three or four students will deliver a ten-to-fifteen-minute presentation to introduce one of the many literary works alluded to-implicitly or explicitly-in Baker's novel. Each presentation should briefly contextualize the work, identifying the author, discussing his or her literary milieu, "reading" the work, and summarizing its characteristic devices. Most importantly, each presentation should explain the thematic significance of the poetic allusion to the novel. Why would Baker allude to this particular poet or poem in his work of fiction? Given the subject of Chowder's anthology, students should pay special attention to matters of poetic form: diction, voice, imagery, tropes and figures, rhythm, sound, and meter.
