I get that all of this interference and diffraction pattern


I get that all of this interference and diffraction pattern stuff should depend on the path difference. After all, that's what's different about a given spot on the viewing screen: different light beams must travel different distances to get there. What I don't get is how the wavelength of the light makes any difference at all. Why do you get different light and dark spot separations for different colors of light in the same apparatus?
