Hurricane Katrina demonstrated that an unexpected catastrophe could have far-reaching consequences for the country. In the aftermath, a number of governmental policy changes have been instituted to prepare for such disasters and mitigate the effects of a disaster. The recent disastrous oil spill in the gulf took a long time to contain and many argued that the government had not learned any lessons at all from Hurricane Katrina, with respect to preparedness and response.
